15 Inspirational Quotes to Motivate You in the New Year

MURRAY NEWLANDS CONTRIBUTOR
Entrepreneur, business advisor and online-marketing professional.

DECEMBER 30, 2014

The start of the New Year is a good time to reflect on the year past and to make a new start, whether in your career, your relationships or your health. Post these quotes in areas where you can see them as the year starts and keep them in mind throughout the year to help inspire you to make next year the best ever.

Quotes for your CAREER:

If you are considering changing careers in the new year, or if you want to advance in your current career, there are many quotes that will inspire you to do what is necessary to achieve those goals. Once you have established the career goals you hope to reach this year, post these inspiring quotes in conspicuous places so that you see them often. They will help you focus on your goals and work toward success.

“One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don't choose your passions; your passions choose you.” --Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

“A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.” --Colin Powell

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”--Albert Einstein

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” --Steve Jobs

“Never continue in a job you don't enjoy. If you're happy in what you're doing, you'll like yourself, you'll have inner peace. And if you have that...you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.”--Johnny Carson

Quotes for your PERSONAL LIFE

Whether you are looking for your soul mate or are struggling in a relationship, the new year is the best time to take stock and determine what direction you want to head in those relationships. These quotes are perfect for those who are seeking guidance in their relationships with others, whether it is a significant other or family member. Review them often throughout the year as a way to refresh what you were thinking when the year began.

“You can talk with someone for years, everyday, and still, it won't mean as much as what you can have when you sit in front of someone, not saying a word, yet you feel that person with your heart, you feel like you have known the person for forever.... connections are made with the heart, not the tongue.”
- C. JoyBell C.

“Well, it seems to me that the best relationships -- the ones that last -- are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is... suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”
- Gillian Anderson

“Every couple needs to argue now and then. Just to prove that the relationship is strong enough to survive. Long-term relationships, the ones that matter, are all about weathering the peaks and the valleys.”
- Nicholas Sparks

“When you hold a grudge, you want someone else’s sorrow to reflect your level of hurt but the two rarely meet.”
- Steve Maraboli

“The love of family and the admiration of friends is much more important than wealth and privilege.” - Charles Kuralt

Quotes for healthy lifestyle.

The most common New Year’s resolution people make is to begin living a healthier lifestyle. People decide to eat healthier and to begin exercising, hoping to lose weight or just get in better shape for the upcoming bathing suit season. These quotes can help keep you on track in order to reach your health and fitness goals.

“No disease that can be treated by diet should be treated with any other means.” - Maimonides

“I've realized that I'm more important than food is. I love a big slice of pizza, but I love myself more. Being thin is about changing the way you think about yourself. It's about saying that you deserve to be healthy.” - Valerie Bertinelli

”There's no quick or magical way to lose weight. You just have to do it the natural way - diet and exercise and stick to it - and be able to do it at your own pace.” - Jordin Sparks

“Change doesn’t come in nickels and dimes. It comes in dedication and sweat.” - Toni Sorenson

“Exercise is a great leveler. It doesn't matter how rich you are, you can't just buy your way into a great body. You have to do the work. I find that comforting. It's one of the few things in life where we're all on a level playing field.” - Vinnie Tortorich

These inspirational quotes can keep you motivated and focused on the goals you set for yourself in the New Year.

"Prologue Profiles" is a podcast series I host featuring intimate and honest interviews with Gen Y’ers taking risks and making their career dreams happen. I call them "Generation Why Not." I’ve hand-picked several stories I think you would find most inspiring as you continue along on your own journey.

1. Milo Pierwola: Professional Adventurer

After college Pierwola became a lawyer because, well, he didn’t know what else to do with his mathematics degree. But Pierwola didn’t want to be a lawyer -- he wanted to travel, and he set a life-changing goal for himself: “to be a profitable world traveler.”

He is now the founder of EXP Adventures, which creates personalized travel experiences around the world. (Um, what?)

2. Loren Brill: Baking Entrepreneur

After college, Brill wasn’t sure what she wanted to do for her career. Then, her lymph nodes became swollen and she was diagnosed with cancer.

Brill got serious about her diet, learned about whole foods and developed a passion for baking. She took cooking classes and came up with all-natural dessert recipes.

Brill recovered from her illness and worked several desk jobs while the desire to get back into baking grew stronger. She entered and won a baking competition, which gave her the confidence to launch Sweet Loren's, featuring all-natural desserts that are available at Whole Foods and Fresh Direct.

3. Andrew Livingston: Fashion and Manufacturing Entrepreneur

Originally from California, Livingston grew up a professional snowboarder and competed nationally in soccer in high school. But a back injury ended his sports career and gave him two options: live in misery or pick a new passion.

Livingston was always into men's style, so he dove head first into fashion. He would identify a hole in the market based around the typically unglamorous world of manufacturing. Livingston dropped out of New York University, raised the money needed to buy an old hat factory in Brooklyn on Kickstarter and co-founded Knickerbocker Manufacturing Co.

Knickerbocker creates white label products for entrepreneur designers, collaborates with up-and-coming brands such as Blind Barber.

4. Taryn Multack: Nail Art Entrepreneur

Multack thought she’d become a fashion designer, but in college she realized designing wasn’t for her.

While working at Macy’s corporate, she attended New York Fashion Week for the first time and was so inspired by what she saw on the runway that she went home to replicate the designs -- on her nails. Multack had been into painting her nails as long as she had been into fashion.

Multack tweeted out her nail art to beauty editors and got the attention of Teen Vogue and The Huffington Post. She made a new design every Tuesday for two years and is now better known to her 525,000 Tumblr followers as Miss Ladyfinger, collaborating with brands such as Maybelline and Seven Jeans.

5. John Lee Dumas: Podcast Entrepreneur

After serving in the military, Dumas found himself dreading his commercial real estate job and especially his commute.

While driving to work he loved listening to podcasts -- but he couldn’t find any shows that put out a new episode every day. Dumas saw an opportunity and launched "Entrepreneur On Fire," a daily podcast featuring interviews with successful entrepreneurs.

Dumas now brings in over six figures a month from his show and online podcasting community, Podcaster’s Paradise. He breaks it all down to the penny in his monthly income reports. Incredible.

9 Habits To Help You Build Wealth On A Small Salary

9 Habits That Will Help You Build Wealth On A Small Salary

MARISA TORRIERI, LEARNVEST
MAY 12, 2014, 3:19 PM

While a six-figure inheritance or high-paying job can land you in the top 1% of earners, it’s the little things — your money habits — that often make the difference between a life of prosperity and one of constant financial stress.

Just ask LearnVest Planning Services CFP® David Blaylock, who doesn’t simply advise his clients on the merits of good money habits — he practices what he preaches.

For example, “I do a periodic review of all the subscriptions I have — the ones that hit my credit cards each month,” says Blaylock. “You’d be surprised at how many subscriptions we all have and how many go unused. You could create some significant savings each month just by looking at those things.”

Taking inventory of your recurring subscriptions and services is just one habit that can get you on the road to better fortune.

“If you look at the average amount of money you will earn over your lifetime, and figure out how many years you are working — most people earn more than a million dollars over their working life but very few people become millionaires,” says Nancy Butler, a Certified Financial Planner™. “How they manage what goes through their fingers usually makes the difference.”

So what are these easy changes that can help move you further along the road to prosperity? We asked two financial planners for their favorites.

1. Reverse Your Thinking

We know: After taxes are taken out and the bills are paid, your paycheck can seem a little anemic — which can make the idea of having to save for retirement too seem like a real stretch. But to build wealth, a change in mindset is required. Namely, instead of spending the rest of your take-home pay, you’d actually take another cut of your paycheck and put it toward your biggest financial goals.

“Most people spend some money, pay their bills and save what’s left,” says Butler. “And that’s backwards: You should be saving for your financial goals first, paying your bills and and then consider spending the money you have leftover.” Another trap is putting your good money habits off till “later,” when life will get easier. The thing is, somehow the minute your income increases, the demands on your money seem to as well.

Now, keep in mind, we’re not suggesting you sock all of your money away and live on rice cakes. As Blaylock puts it: “I’m not asking you to put $1,000 away a month, I’m asking you to put away $50, or a small amount that you can afford. We really can’t underestimate the power of starting small, because most of the time that momentum builds, and once we see progress, we tend to repeat behaviors.”

2. Look Where You Want to Go

Just as performance athletes imagine themselves making the shot over and over again — check out this study for how goal setting improves motivation in athletes — knowing what you want your money to do for you gives your goals a better chance of being reached.

To get going on saving for the future, financial experts often suggest having a five-year plan, where you create specific money goals you’d like to achieve in five years and what you need to achieve those goals. (That is the goal of LearnVest’s 5-Year Planner.) For example, saving six months of income for an emergency fund, or saving for a big event, like a down payment on a house.

“Anytime we have a specific goal in mind, that helps us to save,” says Blaylock. “Whether that goal is emergency savings, or saving for a trip, or saving for college, it doesn’t matter.”

3. Heuristic or Brutally Discipline in Budgeting Price for Items to be Bought or its Purchase Frequency

What if not spending $1,000 on a designer purse or new must-have gadget were as easy as following a rule that dictates you can’t spend more than $300 on something that isn’t essential to your life? The good news is you can create financial rules just like that for yourself; in fact, doing so can be a great habit to get into.

Also known as “heuristics,” these rule-of-thumb strategies we create for ourselves — such as not spending more than $15 on an item of baby clothing, or more than $50 on a pair of shoes — can help simplify the many choices we make in a day. Behavioral economists believe that adopting good heuristics can help one develop good money habits (see this piece for more on how and why they work).l

If creating a great heuristic seems like an overwhelming task, Blaylock suggests starting with something simple, such as eating out only twice a week, or “not getting a cart at Target,” a heuristic that helped one of his colleagues save money.

4. Live Like a “Secret” Rich Person: Do More Saving than Spending. Spend Below Our Income

For some, the image of a millionaire conjures visions of sprawling mansions and shiny Bentleys. But most millionaires don’t live large like that — rather, they tend to live well below their “means” and do more saving than spending. In other words, they’re not flashing their money, according to Dr. Thomas J. Stanley, co-author of “The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy.” Stanley’s book, which details more than two decades worth of surveys and personal interviews with millionaires, reveals that much of the wealth in America is more often the result of hard work, diligent savings, and living below your means.

Las Vegas–based David Sapper, who owns a successful used car business, and his real-estate broker wife make a combined income of $500,000 per year. Yet they live like “secret” rich people, only spending $2,500 per month on all bills and extracurricular expenses like eating out, unlike many of their peers. By putting 90% of his income into savings and investments, Sapper says he’ll be able to retire early.

His advice? “Find the point that you get what you need and you’re happy and comfortable, and just stay there,” says Sapper. “I had an ‘aha!’ moment when I was watching MTV, and LL Cool J was saying, ‘I lease a Honda Accord for $399 a month,’ while other rappers are going broke.”

5. Compound Interest

If you’re in your twenties or thirties, retirement can seem eons away — and saving for it might not seem like a priority. It’s easy to understand: In between paying to attend weddings (which average something like $600 per guest), saving for a down payment on a home, and using anything leftover to put toward “necessities” like vacation, how are you supposed to save anything for retirement?
Unfortunately the later you start saving, the more you’ll have to save. But the sooner you sock money away, the more time it has to compound and grow.

If, for example, you’re 30 and putting $50 a month into a retirement account with a 7% rate of return, that $50 a month would turn into $56,000 in 30 years, says Blaylock. Should you wait to age 40, you would need to contribute $110 per month to get to that same goal. This is because your money has less time to grow which minimizes the impact of compound interest.(For more on compound interest and why losing time on retirement can hurt you, check out “The Secret of Retirement Savings: You Can’t Make up for Lost Time.”)

6. Know What’s Coming in, and What’s Going Out

Most of us have good intentions when it comes to saving money. But if you don’t know what’s coming into your bank account and what’s going out, chances are you don’t know how much you can devote to your goals. And most people generally don’t track their income and spending, says Blaylock. “It really is shocking to me that clients I work with don’t always review their pay stub,” he says.

You can track your expenses for free with an app like LearnVest’s that helps you budget, set goals and save. Remember: Knowledge is the first step to lasting change.

“If I don’t know how much you spend on eating out, how can I expect you to change that?” says Blaylock. “You kind of have to become the chief financial officer of your household.”

7. Getting Out of Debt

Everyone has debt at some point in their life. But if you have bad debt — not student loans and mortgages, but credit card debt, where you’re paying high monthly interest rates — nixing it and getting out of the habit of being a debtor — should be priority number one. “I want somebody to develop a plan to have them out of that debt in 36 months or less,” says Blaylock. “It’s hindering you from making progress on your other goals.”

At the same time, emergencies happen — and a $600 car repair can hit anytime. That’s why Blaylock advises putting half the money you could put into paying down debt into an emergency savings account. So, for example, instead of paying $600 toward credit card debt, consider putting $300 toward emergency savings and $300 toward credit card payments. While this means it will take longer to get out of credit card debt, you’ll have money stored up for an emergency.

“Credit card debt is a result of the ‘uh-oh’ moments,” says Blaylock. “We still don’t have any savings built up because we put it all toward our credit card. So while you’re also working to pay your credit card down, you should consider putting an equal amount to an emergency savings account. I often tell clients that their emergency savings are their insurance policy against falling into credit card debt ever again.”

After you get out of debt, Butler suggests only having one credit card, and come to an agreement with yourself (or your significant other) that it will only be used during an emergency. “Let’s say the car broke down and you can’t fix it — that’s an emergency,” says Butler. “Something’s on sale, and I know I’m going to need it in six months — that’s not an emergency.”

8. Increasing Your Earnings

There are two ways to increase your net worth: Spend less or save more money. “And spending less is only part of it — you have to save, and when appropriate invest, the rest,” says Natalie Taylor, a CFP® with LearnVest Planning Services.“Earning more often doesn’t lead to higher net worth because lifestyle expenses grow along with it.”

But if you grow your income, and set some of those earnings aside, you can grow your bottom line. Aside from getting a raise or winning the lottery, there are a few ways to get more money flowing in.

One suggestion: Diversify your income streams by working a second, part-time job doing something you love. As far as earning more, there are a few things one can do. “For those who cannot cut their expenses enough, I love the idea of working part-time,” says Blaylock. “I have a great friend who is an attorney. She has a big travel habit that she is unwilling to pull back on. So, she works at a flower shop on Saturdays during wedding season. It’s a win for everyone: The flower shop has a dependable employee, and my friend loves flowers so she does not think of it as work.”

Another idea: Look for investment opportunities — perhaps with the help of a financial planner — or other ways to get income to come to you. “I think retirement income should come from multiple sources such as rental income, part-time income and retirement assets,” says Blaylock.

9. Consider Consulting an Expert

There are times in life when consulting an expert pays you back in spades. Even if you’re doing everything you can to start good money habits, using a qualified financial planner can help keep you on track — and help you see the big picture.

“Often times most of us are too emotionally involved in our finances to make really good decisions,” says Blaylock. “So what you’re looking for when you’re getting a professional is accountability and an outside view of what you’re doing. I look at your finances very objectively, where you can’t because you’re that person.”

20 Ways To Validate Your Start Up Idea

20 Questions You Can Ask to Validate Your Startup Idea

SUJAN PATEL
Entrepreneur and Marketer, VP of Marketing at When I Work

DECEMBER 29, 2014

Do you have a million-dollar idea in your head, just waiting to be acted upon? Or will it be a complete bust -- an idea with no actual potential for return?

This question is one that stops many would-be entrepreneurs in their tracks before they even take the chance and launch their potential business ventures. Fortunately, it is possible to make a more educated guess on your idea’s likelihood of success or failure by taking the time to validate your idea before moving forward with it.

Here are 20 questions you can ask to validate your startup idea -- before you commit significant time, money or other resources to its launch:

1. What problem are you solving?

If you can’t clearly state the problem your product or service solves, you probably don’t have a successful idea.

2. How have others attempted to solve this problem before, and why did their solutions succeed or fail?

There’s a lot you can learn from those who have gone before you.

3. How many specific benefits for your product or idea can you list?

The more you can think of, the more likely it is that you’re meeting a real need and can be successful.

4. Can you state, in clear language, the key features of your product or service?

Not being able to easily describe the key features of your idea is a warning sign that the idea isn’t well thought out yet.

5. Does your idea already exist in the same way you were going to create it?

If a similar solution exists, how will yours be different? If you don’t have any clear differentiating benefits or features, you likely need a new idea.

6. Who are your potential competitors?

Having competitors isn’t a bad thing -- it means a market exists. However, knowing what you’ll face if you launch is important, as an overcrowded marketplace or one where consumers have a strong affinity for the dominant brand may be more difficult to break into.

7. What key features does my product or service have that others will have a hard time copying?

Before you go into business, you need to be very clear about what sets you apart from competitors.

8. Have you done a SWOT analysis?

This framework helps you to understand the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that your idea has, giving you a better idea of the overall likelihood for success.

9. Do you have access to the various resources you need to launch a business?

While you don’t need to be rich to launch a business, you will need some combination of time and money, depending on the scope of your idea. If you have no way to access everything you need, you’re better off waiting to launch your company until your situation is different.

10. Do you have a mentor or industry advisor that you can call on?

Certainly, you can go it alone if you have to, but when you start a new business, having the advice of others in a similar business space can prevent unnecessary expenditures or missteps.

11. Can you name somebody who would benefit from your product or service?

This is the beginning of market research -- who do you actually know that would use your idea? A general demographic isn’t enough, so take the time to hone in your target buyer personas.

12. What is the size of the market that will buy your product or service?

If you don’t know the size of the market, you have a lot of research ahead of you. Understanding how many people need your idea -- and what they’re willing to pay for it -- will help you determine whether your concept is viable.?

13. Have you reached out to potential customers for feedback?

Getting feedback before investing further money can help you avoid creating a product or service that nobody really wants.

14. Can you set up a landing page and encourage interested people to sign up for more information?

This can be an easy and inexpensive way to test interest in a product or service. If a lot of people are interested, it’s a great sign that you’re on the right track!

15. What would it take to build a minimum viable product to test the market?

One mistake many entrepreneurs make is thinking that they have to launch a finished concept right away. Consider starting small, gauging interest and iterating as you go.

16. Can you get paying customers from your target market to pre-order based on a blueprint or mockup?

Pre-orders are a solid sign of customer commitment. Someone saying they’re interested is one thing, but seeing people actually pony up their credit card information is a much stronger sign of potential success.

17. Can you produce the actual product yourself, or do you have a partner who can?

As you might expect, before launch, you need to know who’s actually going to produce the first set of products or services, as well as whether they can do so within your budget.

18. Do you have distributors or partners to help you scale your business?

Once you have paying customers, you’ll need to ramp up actual distribution to meet demand. Do you have access to the partners and/or money needed to do so?

19. What will it take to break even or make a profit?

Some ideas take a lot of upfront investment, while others don’t. If yours does, it’s a good idea to plan for how you’ll handle your finances and daily needs while you’re waiting for your product or service to gain traction.

20. How can investors in your idea make a profit?

If you want others to come alongside your business and help you grow, you’ll have to know how they can benefit.

It may take some time to come up with answers to all these questions, but once you have them, you should have a better idea about how viable your idea is. If it passes these tests, go for it! If not, keep thinking -- your next idea may be the one that changes the world.

8 Strategies To Succeed

8 Strategies To Stay A Bold New Course In 2015

“I don’t do resolutions,” my friend Sandy told me. “I never keep them so what’s the point?” It’s not an uncommon attitude. Nor is it an unreasonable one when you look at the stats: 80% of people break their resolutions by the end of January. While sometimes people make foolish resolutions, the real reason many fail to keep them is simple – they lack the strategies needed to stay the course, wrongly assuming that motivation alone will do the trick.
Not only is motivation tenuous in nature, but our own self-doubt and fear of failure can sabotage our efforts before we ever really get started. To make the changes you really want – whether on January 1st or any day of the year, you have to employ strategies to steel your resolve and rise above the self-doubts, fear and old habits of behavior that strike at the heart of every worthwhile endeavor.
Here are eight proven “success strategies” to stay a bold new course in 2015; to make it your year of living bravely, no matter what.

1. Clarify Your Big Why
Courageous action without a clear purpose can result in catastrophic failure.  So before you start out, be crystal clear about why you want to do what you do. Doing so will enable you to be more intentional in creating it, dig deeper when the going gets tough or habitual (fear-fuelled) ways of thinking and acting threaten to pull you back to the status quo and well-worn excuses. As I wrote in Stop Playing Safe, “When you have a big enough Why you can figure out any How.”

2. Confront The Cost
Change, even change for the better, is difficult because it involves risk and exacts a cost on us. If it didn’t exact some toll then everyone would be changing those aspects of their lives – from destructive relationships, jobs they loathe to unhealthy habits – that pull them down and limit their happiness.  The reason they don’t is because to change anything we have to forego the pay-off we get from sticking with the status quo: familiarity, comfort, security, short-term gratification. As I wrote in Stop Playing Safe,  giving up the payoff you get from sticking with the status quo requires confronting the long term cost of inaction!

3. Narrow Your Focus!
Aiming high is great, but deciding you want to run a marathon, finish your MBA, change jobs, renovate your home, and write a book all in the next year can leave you bouncing about like Tigger on Red Bull, not quite sure which direction you are going. Instead, set yourself up for success by focusing on one major goal at a time, not twenty-one. As Daniel Goleman has written in his latest book Focus,  distraction is a goal killer and undermines your change efforts at every turn! So too is overwhelm and exhaustion.

4. Enlist Your Support Crew
Never underestimate the power of your social environment to support or sabotage your success. Sir Michael Hargraves, whose new book Mind Hacking will be released in 2015, recommends collaborating with others who want to achieve similar goals. You should also recruit a cheer squad among your family and friends, enlist someone(or several someones) to hold you accountable, hire a trainer, engage a coach, create a Facebook accountability group. Likewise, if there are people or environmental triggers in your life that pull you down or off track, address them directly and set clear boundaries up front.  When you surround yourself with people who believe in you, it makes success so much easier to achieve!

5. Make It Measureable
It’s great to want to eat better, get fitter, be happier, relax more and create better work/life balance but you could add an apple a day to your diet and tick the first box. Set a goal you can track and measure. For instance, if you want to get fitter, aim to run 10k by May 30th, then schedule how many workouts you’ll do each week to build up to it.

6. Start Small
Every great feat is really just the accumulation of thousands of smaller steps . So however big your goal, first break it down into small short-term goals, and then break those down into smaller, highly ‘doable’ bite-size steps. E.g. Step 1, Print out this article. Step 2, Write down your goal (doing so increases the likelihood of achieving it by 70%). Step 3, Tell your partner and ask them to hold you accountable. Step 4, Schedule time to write down the next 10 steps! If you take one action every day, however insignificant it may seem, a year from now you’ll be in a very different place.

7. Prepare For Setbacks
Success wouldn’t be meaningful if it landed easily in your lap. In fact it’s the roll-up-your-sleeves hard- work that grows your muscles for life. If it were easy to live a big and brave life everyone would be doing it. Assuming everything should fall neatly into place is a surefire recipe for disappointment and frustration. So too is thinking you’ll be as motivated a month from now as you are today. Motivations ebb and flow. So too does luck. What matters most isn’t that everything goes exactly to plan, but that you stay connected to your ‘Big Why’ which will help you stay the course when plans don’t work out, doubt creeps in and motivation wanes.  Your disappointments, bad-days, failures and setbacks don’t define you; how you respond to them will.

8. Invest In Your Best
Who are you when you are at your best? Physically strong and energetic with plenty of stamina. Emotionally confident, calm and resilient. Mentally focused and clear on top priorities. Spiritually centred and purposeful. Now ask yourself, what do you have to do for yourself – daily, weekly, regularly – to be that person… to be playing your ‘A Game?’ Whatever it is, schedule time right now into your calendar for doing it! For working out, for planning ahead, decompressing, re-centering, and recharging. You will go further and bounce back faster if you are continually investing in being your ‘best-self.’ It’s not selfish or indulgent… it’s indispensible for living your best life!
Truly successful people do things others don’t want to do, or don’t think to do. They are clear about what they want, focused on getting it, prepared to challenge themselves, and they are persistent when plans don’t work out. If you want to  MAKE 2015 YOUR YEAR OF LIVING BRAVELY, invest time now to plan ahead so you can start strong, stay brave and live well, no matter what.

Usaha Yang Kekal Jaman

MOTIVATORINDONESIA.CO.ID

5 Usaha Yang Dijamin Kekal Hingga Akhir Zaman

Kesimpulannya : Cobalah mengamati semua jenis usaha dibidang kesehatan.

7 Things Successful Professionals Never Do

System the 7 things successful professionals never say

By Ilya Pozin
Dec 12 2014

You want to be successful. Everyone does. But your actual words might be undermining your chances of success. The things you say in the office, no matter how innocuous they seem to you, might be knocking you down the career ladder and putting the top position you dream about out of reach.

Your career is too important to be tanked by a few negative phrases. Here are the seven things you should strike from your workplace vocabulary if you want to achieve the success you richly deserve:

1. “That’s not in my job description.”

When you accepted your current position, you had a good idea of what the responsibilities and workload of the role would entail. Throughout the months or years since you settled into your job, however, your role has expanded and changed shape. Some of these changes have probably been good, while others have made you wish for simpler times. When a boss or manager piles another responsibility on your already sore shoulders, it might be tempting to pull out this classic gem of work avoidance.

The better option, however, is to schedule a time to talk to your boss about your role. A specific conversation about your place in the organization is a good time to bring up the particulars of your job description, not when you’re asked to get something accomplished. No matter how stressed you are or how valid the complaint, dropping this phrase only makes you look lazy and unmotivated.

2. “It can’t be done.”

Throwing in the towel makes you look like a quitter — and quitters don’t get promoted. Instead of giving up on a project entirely, frame your response in terms of alternative ways to get the work accomplished. Very little is truly impossible, and most managers and executives want forward-thinking problem solvers to climb the corporate ladder. If you offer solutions instead of giving up, you’ll be seen as a valuable member of the team.

3. “It’s not my fault.”

No one wants to work with a blame shifter. After all, it’s just a matter of time before this person eventually shifts the blame onto you. Take ownership of your mistakes instead of pointing out where others have fallen short. Admitting to a mistake shows character and the ability to learn and grow from problems. Pointing the finger at someone else strongly implies you’ll never truly learn from your errors.

4. “This will just take a minute.”

Unless something will literally take only 60 seconds, don’t overpromise and underdeliver. Saying something will only take “a minute” also has the side effect of undermining your efforts. Most likely the reason the particular task won’t take long is due to the benefit of your professional experience and acumen. By saying it will “just” take a minute, you’re shortchanging what you bring to the table.

5. “I don’t need any help.”

The rugged lone wolf type might be the hero of most action movies, but they’re unlikely to become the hero at your company. You might think you can go it alone on a project or in your career, but teamwork is essential. Being able to work with others is the hallmark of a good leader; you’re unlikely to climb your career ladder always flying solo.

6. “It’s not fair.”

Life isn’t fair, and often your career won’t be as well. Instead of complaining, you should look for specific and actionable workarounds to the problems you encounter. Is it unfair a coworker got to run point on the project you wanted? Maybe, but instead of complaining, work harder and go the extra mile. Finding a solution will always be preferable in your professional life to whining about a problem.

7. “This is the way it’s always been done.”

Doing things the way they’ve always been done is no way to run a business. Just ask some of the companies which toed the line, accepted the status quo, and went under. Adapting to an ever-changing marketplace is really the only way to survive in an economy constantly being disrupted by the next big thing.

You don’t have to be a slave to the trends, but you also can’t stick your head in the sand and hope things go back to normal. Instead, come up with creative solutions to new problems and innovate, and you’ll soon be in the driver’s seat taking your organization into the future.

Everyone wants to be successful, so make sure your words aren’t holding you back. These seven phrases are career kryptonite — by avoiding them, you can fly into your future and become a successful superstar.

3 Decisions That Make Differences in Your Life

TONY ROBBINS CONTRIBUTOR
Author, Personal Coach
NOVEMBER 18, 2014

If you make these decisions unconsciously, you'll end up like majority of people who tend to be out of shape physically, exhausted emotionally and often financially stressed. But if you make these decisions consciously, you can literally change the course of your life today.

Decision 1: Carefully choose what to FOCUS ON

At every moment, millions of things compete for your attention. You can focus on things that are happening right here and now or on what you want to create in the future. Or you can focus on the past.

Where focus goes, energy flows. What you focus on and your pattern for doing so shapes your entire life.

Which area do you tend to focus on more: what you have or what’s missing from your life?

I’m sure you think about both sides of this coin. But if you examine your habitual thoughts, what do you tend to spend most of your time dwelling on?

Rather than focusing on what you don’t have and begrudging those who are better off than you financially, perhaps you should acknowledge that you have much to be grateful for and some of it has nothing to do with money. You can be grateful for your health, family, friends, opportunities and mind.

Developing a habit of appreciating what you have can create a new level of emotional well-being and wealth. But the real question is, do you take time to deeply feel grateful with your mind, body, heart and soul? That’s where the joy, happiness and fulfillment can be found.

Consider a second pattern of focus that affects the quality of your life: Do you tend to focus more on what you can control or what you can’t?

If you focus on what you can’t control, you’ll have more stress in life. You can influence many aspects of your life but you usually can’t control them.

When you adopt this pattern of focus, your brain has to make another decision:

Decision 2: Figure out, What does this all mean?

Ultimately, how you feel about your life has nothing to do with the events in it or with your financial condition or what has (or hasn't) happened to you. The quality of your life is controlled by the meaning you give these things.

Most of the time you may be unaware of the effect of your unconscious mind in assigning meaning to life’s events.

When something happens that disrupts your life (a car accident, a health issue, a job loss), do you tend to think that this is the end or the beginning?

If someone confronts you, is that person insulting you, coaching you or truly caring for you?

Does a devastating problem mean that God is punishing you or challenging you? Or is it possible that this problem is a gift from God?

Your life takes on whatever meaning you give it. With each meaning comes a unique feeling or emotion and the quality of your life involves where you live emotionally.

I always ask during my seminars, “How many of you know someone who is on antidepressants and still depressed?” Typically 85 percent to 90 percent of those assembled raise their hands.

How is this possible? The drugs should make people feel better. It's true that antidepressants do come with labels warning that suicidal thoughts are a possible side effect.

But no matter how much a person drugs himself, if he constantly focuses on what he can’t control in life and what’s missing, he won't find it hard to despair. If he adds to that a meaning like “life is not worth living,” that's an emotional cocktail that no antidepressant can consistently overcome.

Yet if that same person can arrive at a new meaning, a reason to live or a belief that all this was meant to be, then he will be stronger than anything that ever happened to him.

When people shift their habitual focus and meanings, there’s no limit on what life can become. A change of focus and a shift in meaning can literally alter someone's biochemistry in minutes.

So take control and always remember: Meaning equals emotion and emotion equals life. Choose consciously and wisely. Find an empowering meaning in any event, and wealth in its deepest sense will be yours today.

Once you create a meaning in your mind, it creates an emotion, and that emotion leads to a state for making your third decision:

Decision 3: What will you do?

The actions you take are powerfully shaped by the emotional state you're in. If you're angry, you're going to behave quite differently than if you're feeling playful or outrageous.

If you want to shape your actions, the fastest way is to change what you focus on and shift the meaning to be something more empowering.

Two people who are angry will behave differently. Some pull back. Others push through.

Some individuals express anger quietly. Others do so loudly or violently. Yet others suppress it only to look for a passive-aggressive opportunity to regain the upper hand or even exact revenge.

Where do these patterns come from? People tend to model their behavior on those they respect, enjoy and love.

The people who frustrated or angered you? You often reject their approaches.

Yet far too often you may find yourself falling back into patterns you witnessed over and over again in your youth and were displeased by.

It’s very useful for you to become aware of your patterns when you are frustrated, angry or sad or feel lonely. You can’t change your patterns if you’re not aware of them.

Now that you’re aware of the power of these three decisions, start looking for role models who are experiencing what you want out of life. I promise you that those who have passionate relationships have a totally different focus and arrive at totally different meanings for the challenges in relationships than people who are constantly bickering or fighting.

It’s not rocket science. If you become aware of the differences in how people approach these three decisions, you’ll have a pathway to help you create a permanent positive change in any area of life.

8 Unforgettable Qualities of Good Bosses

8 qualities that make good bosses unforgettable
By Jeff Haden
Dec 12 2014

I remember all of my bosses. Some were bad. Most were good.

But only one was, in the best possible way, truly memorable.

Unforgettable bosses possess qualities that may not show up on paper but always show up where it matters most — in the minds and even hearts of the people they lead.

Here are some of the qualities of truly unforgettable bosses:

1. They believe the unbelievable.

Most people try to achieve the achievable; that’s why most goals and targets are incremental rather than inconceivable.

Memorable bosses expect more — from themselves and from others. Then they show you how to get there. And they bring you along for what turns out to be an unbelievable ride.

2. They see opportunity in instability and uncertainty.

Unexpected problems, unforeseen roadblocks, major crises… most bosses take down the sails, batten the hatches, and hope to wait out the storm.

A few see a crisis as an opportunity. They know it’s extremely difficult to make major changes, even necessary ones, when things are going relatively smoothly.

They know reorganizing an entire sales team is accepted more easily when a major customer goes under. They know creating new sales channels is a lot easier when a major competitor enters the market. They know reorganizing manufacturing operations is a lot easier when the flow of supplies and components gets disrupted.

Memorable bosses see instability and uncertainty not as a barrier but as an enabler. They reorganize, reshape, and re-engineer to reassure, motivate, and inspire — and in the process make the organization much stronger.

3. They wear their emotions on their sleeves.

Good bosses are professional.

Memorable bosses are highly professional and yet also openly human. They show sincere excitement when things go well. They show sincere appreciation for hard work and extra effort. They show sincere disappointment — not in others, but in themselves. They celebrate, they empathize, they worry. Sometimes they even get frustrated or angry.

In short, they’re human. And, unlike many bosses, they act as if they know it.

Professionalism is admirable. Professionalism — with a healthy blend of humanity — is inspiring.

4. They protect others from the bus.

Terrible bosses throw their employees under the bus.

Good bosses never throw their employees under the bus.

Memorable bosses see the bus coming and pull their employees out of the way often without the employee knowing until much, much later… if ever, because memorable bosses never try to take credit.

And if they can’t, they take the hit. (And later speak privately to the employee in question.)

5. They’ve been there, done that… and still do that.

Dues aren’t paid, past tense. Dues get paid each and every day. The true measure of value is the tangible contribution we make on a daily basis.

That’s why no matter what they may have accomplished in the past, memorable bosses are never too good to roll up their sleeves, get dirty, and do the “grunt” work. No job is ever too menial, no task ever too unskilled or boring.

Memorable bosses never feel entitled, which means no one feels entitled to anything but the fruits of their labor.

6. They lead by permission, not authority.

Every boss has a title. That title gives them the right to direct others, to make decisions, to organize and instruct and discipline.

Memorable bosses lead because their employees want them to lead. Their employees are motivated and inspired by the person, not the title.

Through their words and actions they cause employees feel they work with, not for, a boss. Many bosses don’t even recognize there’s a difference… but memorable bosses do.

7. They embrace a larger purpose.

A good boss works to achieve company goals.

A memorable boss also works to achieve company goals — and achieves more than other bosses — but also works to serve a larger purpose: to advance the careers of employees, to rescue struggling employees, to instill a sense of pride and self-worth in others. They aren’t just remembered for nuts and bolts achievements but for helping others on a personal and individual level.

Memorable bosses embrace a larger purpose, because they know business is always personal.

8. They take real, not fake risks.

Many bosses, like many people, try to stand out in some superficial way. Maybe through their clothes, their interests, or a public display of support for a popular initiative. They do stand out but they stand out for reasons of sizzle, not steak.

Memorable bosses stand out because they are willing to take an unpopular stand, take an unpopular step, accept the discomfort of ignoring the status quo, and risk sailing uncharted waters.

They take real risks not for the sake of risk but for the sake of the reward they believe possible. And by their example they inspire others to take risks in order to achieve what they believe is possible.

In short, memorable bosses inspire others to achieve their dreams: by words, by actions, and most importantly, by example.

Merdeka.com mencatat sindiran-sindiran Andrinof atas buruknya kinerja pemerintahan sebelumnya. Berikut paparannya

"Kita wisatawan mancanegara cuma 8 juta. Singapura dan Thailand bisa 24 juta. Padahal potensi kita besar. Angka 8 juta itu kecil cuma lebih sedikit dari wisman salah satu Malaysia. Padahal di sana tidak ada apa apa kecuali kereta gantung," ucap Andrinof di Pulau Belitung, Minggu (14/12).

3. Minim serap tenaga kerja, Tidak Membangun Industri Padat Karya

Seharusnya, setiap satu persen pertumbuhan ekonomi mampu menyerap 350.000 tenaga kerja. "Kemampuan menyediakan lapangan kerja per satu persen pertumbuhan ekonomi menurun. Sekarang cuma 210.000 per satu persen. Pertumbuhan tidak berkualitas," ucap Andrinof dalam acara Musrenbang Regional di Pulau Belitung, Sabtu (13/12).

Andrinof menuding, rendahnya serapan tenaga kerja disebabkan pemerintah hanya mendorong sektor pertambangan.

"Daya serap tenaga kerja jadi serapan per pertumbuhan ekonomi menurun.

5. Pembangunan SDM cuma kesehatan fisik, Bukan Intelektual, Keahlian dan Wawasan.

Tahun depan, masyarakat ekonomi ASEAN (MEA) mulai diberlakukan.

19 Millionaire Secrets

19 Things The Millionaire Next Door Won't Tell You

Len Penzo dot Com

DEC. 5, 2014,

Not every millionaire shows off his wealth.

Although having a million bucks isn't as impressive as it once was, it's still nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, Reuters reports that in 2009 there are 7.8 million millionaires in the United States. That's a lot of people and the odds are one or two of them are living near you.

Heck, one of them might even be your neighbor. In fact, the odds are very good that it is your neighbor.

But, Len, you don't know my neighbor. That guy doesn't look anything like a millionaire.

Well, guess what? A millionaire who is truly financially savvy won't be easily recognizable.

1. He always spends less than he earns. In fact his mantra is, over the long run, you're better off if you strive to be anonymously rich rather than deceptively poor.

2. He knows that patience is a virtue. The odds are you won't become a millionaire overnight. If you're like him, your wealth will be accumulated gradually by diligently saving your money over multiple decades.

3. When you go to his modest three-bed two-bath house, you're going to be drinking Folgers instead of Starbucks. And if you need a lift, well, you're going to get a ride in his ten-year-old economy sedan. And if you think that makes him cheap, ask him if he cares. (He doesn't.)

4. He pays off his credit cards in full every month. He's smart enough to understand that if he can't afford to pay cash for something, then he can't afford it.

5. He realized early on that money does not buy happiness. If you're looking for nirvana, you need to focus on attaining financial freedom.

6. He never forgets that financial freedom is a state of mind that comes from being debt free. Best of all, it can be attained regardless of your income level.

7. He knows that getting a second job not only increases the size of your bank account quicker but it also keeps you busy — and being busy makes it difficult to spend what you already have.

8. He understands that money is like a toddler; it is incapable of managing itself. After all, you can't expect your money to grow and mature as it should without some form of credible money management.

9. He's a big believer in paying yourself first. Paying yourself first is an essential tenet of personal finance and a great way to build your savings and instill financial discipline.

10. Although it's possible to get rich if you spend your life making a living doing something you don't enjoy, he wonders why you do. Life is too short. Always choose something we enjoy to do.

11. He knows that failing to plan is the same as planning to fail. He also knows that the few millionaires that reached that milestone without a plan got there only because of dumb luck. It's not enough to simply declare that you want to be financially free.

12. When it came time to set his savings goals, he wasn't afraid to think big. Financial success demands that you have a vision that is significantly larger than you can currently deliver upon.

13. Over time, he found out that hard work can often help make up for a lot of financial mistakes — and you will make financial mistakes.

14. He realizes that stuff happens, that's why you're a fool if you don't insure yourself against risk. Remember that the potential for bankruptcy is always just around the corner and can be triggered from multiple sources: The death of the family's key bread winner, divorce, or disability that leads to a loss of work.

15. He understands that time is an ally of the young. He was fortunate enough to begin saving in his twenties so he could take maximum advantage of the power of compounding interest on his nest egg.

16. He knows that you can't spend what you don't see. You should use automatic paycheck deductions to build up your retirement and other savings accounts. As your salary increases you can painlessly increase the size of those deductions.

17. Even though he has a job that he loves, he doesn't have to work anymore because everything he owns is paid for — and has been for years.

18. He's not impressed that you drive an over-priced luxury car and live in a McMansion that's two sizes too big for your family of four.

19. After six months of asking, he finally quit waiting for you to return his pruning shears. He broke down and bought himself a new pair last month. There's no hard feelings though; he can afford it.

So that's it. Now you know what your millionaire neighbor won't tell you.

What makes a company great to work for?

Good pay and benefits don't hurt. But when it comes down to it, employees said it's office culture and great colleagues that make these companies satisfying places to work.
Glassdoor asked people about the pros and cons of their employers, and had them rate their company between one and five stars.

More than 800,000 responses were submitted between November 2013 and November 2014. Here are the 10 companies with more than 1,000 employees that ranked the highest:

1. Google
Sure, the pay is outstanding, but so is the work. "My work is used by lots and lots of users. It's cool stuff that makes people happy," says one Google (GOOG) staffer.

While Google's arsenal of perks – which includes everything from "stock equity," to "free 24/7 gym access," "aaaaaamazing holiday parties," and "mini-kitchens, snacks, drinks, free breakfast/lunch/dinner, all day, errr'day" – are notoriously cushy, the company wins real points with employees for attracting "the best talent and best people to work with in the world" as well as providing abundant "opportunities for career growth, and tons of career development resources."

2. Bain & Company
The people are incredible, says one employee. "There's a mix of intelligence but also humility that you don't find at the other top consulting firms."

Employees at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm headquartered in Boston, rave about its "incredible culture" and its "incredible people [who display] a mix of intelligence but also humility that you don't find at other top consulting firms."

Wrote one reviewer: "Everyone at Bain is the type of person you'd want to be friends with and go hang out with on a Saturday night."

The company also received high marks for its commitment to its employees' happiness and well-being. “The company works to adapt the job to fit your personal needs and there is a mutual respect for this across the business," wrote one reviewer. Added another: "I was often impressed and inspired by leadership's dedication to doing what was right for the client, and simultaneously trying to protect sustainable work-life balance and continuously cultivate a fun, connected office/firm culture."

3. Nestle Purina PetCare
The company's "strong midwestern roots" make it a great place to work, as do the "vast opportunities that come with an international giant parent company," said one engineer. It is a subsidiary of Nestle based in St. Louis.

Nestlé Purina Petcare, a St. Louis, Missouri-based subsidiary of Nestlé that produces and markets pet food, combines the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a small company with the "vast opportunities that come with an international giant parent company."

"The culture is one of the best I have been a part of. I am proud of where I work," wrote one reviewer, while another singled out the fact that career development is "easily accessible and encouraged by management."

4. F5 Networks
"My skills are getting better, and there is a clear career path for software engineers that don't want to go into management," said one F5 Networks (FFIV) software engineer.

On top of "great pay and benefits" F5 Networks --  an information technology company headquartered in Seattle --  boasts a laid-back, friendly culture where work-life balance is encouraged. "Managers show by example that time off is not only acceptable but a good thing," wrote one software engineer. Time at work is generally enjoyable, because "the culture is something that makes your day worth to be in the office, the atmosphere where everybody understands we are in the same ship and we need to sail it together," according to another reviewer.

Another bonus? "Free snacks."

5. Boston Consulting Group
Outstanding colleagues, according to one respondent. "The best and the brightest from all fields and backgrounds (think Rhodes scholars) create a really rich intellectual atmosphere."

Employees at this management consulting firm were blown-away by the quality of their co-workers. "Outstanding colleagues," wrote one reviewer. "Best and brightest from all fields/backgrounds (think Rhodes scholars) create a really rich intellectual atmosphere."

Agreed another: "We have a lot of inspiring people within the company, who work on many topics that matter not only for the business, but also society."

6. Chevron
Employees said they are pleased with the pay, benefits and "excellent" retirement program at Chevron (CVX).

Chevron is an energy corporation with "above average pay" and "great benefits," such as the "excellent retirement program." Employees also appreciated the emphasis on work-life balance, including a nine/eighty work week, and the convivial, "supportive company culture."

7. HEB
"One of the few companies that actually cares about its employees," said one of the grocery store chain's workers.

H-E-B, a privately held Texas-based grocery chain, is given high-marks by employees for creating a warm environment. "Great pay. Great benefits. Ability to move up," wrote one reviewer. "One of the few companies that actually cares about its employees."

The sentiment was echoed by a H-E-B customer service representative, who praised the company for its competitive pay, great benefits, a management that "really cares about you," as well as "friendly co-workers or partners" and a "positive environment."

8. In-N-Out Burger
Most fast food workers complain about pay and hours, but In-N-Out Burger bucks the trend. One worker said the chain offers "great pay rates" and "fantastic hours."

Perhaps you're surprised to see a fast-food chain on the list, but In-N-Out's employees express near-universal praise for their employer. “Great pay rates, fantastic hours, calm and comfortable atmosphere, plenty of benefits, full of opportunity friendly coworkers, overall very happy with the experience I gained here," gushed an In-N-Out Burger associate. Other employees pointed to the company's values, atmosphere, vacation policy as factors that make the company a great place to work.

9. McKinsey & Company
The team is a "really amazing set of people" who are "caring, challenging, and whip smart," said one staffer.

McKinsey & Company, a multinational management consulting firm, was praised by employees for championing professional development. The company's management team was singled out – "leadership inspires its employees to work hard and drive impact for clients," wrote a senior associate – particularly CEO Dominic Barton, who enjoys an approval rating of 98 percent. As a whole, employees also appreciated their co-workers. "Really amazing set of people – caring, challenging and whip smart," wrote one reviewer.

10. Mayo Clinic
A professional work environment, state-of-the-art facilities, and collaboration between departments add up to a great working environment, says a research associate.

Employees at the Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit medical practice and medical research center, appreciate the company's "extremely professional work environment," as well as its "state-of-the-art facilities."  In general, the company was touted for promoting a good work/life balance, giving employees "ample time off."

The Top 10 Companies to Work For in 2015

Google, Facebook, Apple and Twitter may duke it out for Silicon Valley supremacy, but in one aspect, Google reigns supreme.

The search giant tops the list of companies with 1,000 or more employees in the U.S. for best place to work in 2015, according to social jobs and careers community Glassdoor, which ranks businesses based on employee reviews.

For its seventh annual Employees' Choice Awards, Glassdoor asked its members for their opinions on some of the best reasons to work for their employer, and some of the downsides. To be considered, the employers on this list had to have at least 50 approved company reviews in the past year. The overall ranking of a company (on a five-point scale) was determined based on the quantity, quality and consistency of employee reviews.

This is the first time Google nabbed the top spot, although its position isn't that big of a surprise: The tech company is famous – even parodied – for its extensive, cushy, at times downright crazy seeming benefits, along with its talented, passionate workforce. ( Last year's winner, Bain & Company, slipped just one spot to the runner-up position.)

But while tech companies in general are known for their over-the-top perks, that doesn't automatically endear them to their employees. Although Google has consistently received high marks, other high-profile tech companies haven't cracked Glassdoor's annual top 50. This is the first year, for example, that Apple (#22) made the cut. And Twitter, last year's runner-up for best place to work, is nowhere to be found on this year's list.

All of which is to say that the tech industry by no means dominates the top 50, or even top 10, where it claimed just two spots. Instead, companies on this year's list represent diverse industries, from Nestle Purina PetCare (#3), to In-N-Out (#8), the Mayo Clinic (#10), Southwest (#15), Nike (#29), Ford Motor Company (#35) and ESPN (#45).

Check out a countdown of Glassdoor's 10 best places to work in 2015, followed by a chart of all 50 top companies.

It can be difficult to keep people loyal in direct sales since in this industry, people tend to always be looking for the “next big thing.” However there is a lot that can be done to keep a direct sales force not only loyal, but also motivated and consistently hungry to succeed. Following are the four points I have learned are most important.

1. Provide clear direction.
Perhaps the most important part of keeping a sales force motivated is providing a clear direction. If you aren’t able to provide a clear vision of the path the company is heading down, then you can’t provide your sales force with deliverables to prove the company and its team members are actually heading down that path. Without the vision and steps to get there, you won’t be able to keep your sales force motivated. On the contrary, the best leaders have a clear vision of where they want to take their organization, and are therefore able to mobilize troops to accomplish seemingly impossible goals.

2. Be likable.
Positioning yourself as a “likeable” and respected CEO is imperative to maintaining a loyal and motivated direct sales force. With employees, you can force people to follow you even if you’re not respected. In direct selling, your sales force is a “volunteer army,” so they get to decide who they work for, how long they work and where they work. If people don’t like and respect you, they won’t stay with you.

3. Be transparent and communicate.
Communication is key in any relationship, including that of a direct sales team. Keeping the company in the news and then sharing the good news with your sales force creates a sense of pride for the brand they work for. Also, keeping your sales force updated on what the company is doing allows them to be part of the bigger conversation, and shows they are valued. The sales force is not always located near a company’s headquarters, but oftentimes dispersed across a wide territory. Video updates from the CEO are a great way to keep team members that may be located far away feeling closely connected and can help break up the distance.

Another part of communication with your direct sales force is ensuring the messages being communicated are the same across the board. Something that speaks to this is the phrase “one voice, one vision.” When messages become mixed and diluted, trust between the sales force and company leadership become strained. Monthly video updates allow company leaders to implement the “one voice, one vision” strategy, assuring the sales foce by communicating the same message over and over that the company is staying on the path they were told it is going down. Transparency and communication go hand in hand. A monthly video is one way to provide this.

4. It’s all about the product and the opportunity.
Just as important as the points above, you need to provide your sales force with the best opportunity possible and a product they are proud of. It’s crucial the field believes in the product they are selling, since in today’s market there are so many copycats out there. Essentially, if you don’t have a real value proposition, you won’t be successful.

8 Surprising Ways to Make Your First Million Dollars

8 Surprising Ways to Make Your First Million Dollars

BY JEFF HADEN
@jeff_haden

Say you want to become a millionaire. Or a multimillionaire.
Or hey, even a billionaire. (Why not?)

The goal is clear...but the path can be anything but.
But not to Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of HubSpot (No. 1,100 on the 2014 Inc. 5000 and a company that recently went public). Dharmesh sees a clear, if slow and difficult, path to becoming a millionaire--or to reaching whatever level of financial success you aspire to.
Here's Dharmesh:
Money of course isn't everything. Not by a long shot. Where your definition of success is concerned, money may rank far down the list. Everyone's definition of "success" is different.
Here's my definition: Success is making the people that believed in you look brilliant.
For me, money doesn't matter all that much, but I'll confess it did at one time (probably because I didn't have very much).
So let's say money is on your list. And let's say, like millions of other people, that you'd like to be a millionaire. What kinds of things should you do to increase your chances of joining the millionaire's club?
Here are the steps I'd suggest. They're neither fast nor easy. But they're more likely to work than the quick and easy path.

1. STOP OBSESSING ABOUT MONEY
While it sounds counter-intuitive, maintaining a laser-like focus on how much you make distracts you from doing the things that truly contribute to building and growing wealth.
So shift your perspective. See money not as the primary goal but as a by product of doing the right things.

2. Start tracking how many people you help, even if in a very small way
The most successful people I know--both financially and in other ways--are shockingly helpful. They're incredibly good at understanding other people and helping them achieve their goals. They know their success is ultimately based on the success of the people around them.
So they work hard to make other people successful: their employees, their customers, their vendors and suppliers...because they know, if they can do that, then their own success will surely follow.
And they will have built a business--or a career--they can be truly proud of.

3. Stop thinking about making a million dollars and start thinking about SERVING A MILLION PEOPLE.
When you only have a few customers and your goal is to make a lot of money, you're incented to find ways to wring every last dollar out of those customers.
But when you find a way to serve a million people, many other benefits follow. The effect of word of mouth is greatly magnified. The feedback you receive is exponentially greater--and so are your opportunities to improve your products and services. You get to hire more employees and benefit from their experience, their skills, and their overall awesomeness.
And in time, your business becomes something you never dreamed of--because your customers and your employees have taken you to places you couldn't even imagine.
Serve a million people--and serve them incredibly well--and the money will follow.

4. See making money as a way to make more things
Generally speaking, there are two types of people.
One makes things because they want to make money; the more things they make, the more money they make. What they make doesn't really matter that much to them--they'll make anything as long as it pays.
The other wants to make money because it allows them to make more things. They want to improve their product. They want to extend their line. They want to create another book, another song, another movie. They love what they make and they see making money as a way to do even more of what they love. They dream of building a company that makes the best things possible...and making money is the way to fuel that dream and build that company they love.
While it is certainly possible to find that one product that everyone wants and grow rich by selling that product, most successful businesses evolve and grow and, as they make money, reinvest that money in a relentless pursuit of excellence.
"We don't make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies."--Walt Disney
Work is a creation. A contribution. Not just a money-making.

5. Do ONE thing better
Pick one thing you're already better at than most people. Just. One. Thing. Become maniacally focused at doing that one thing. Work. Train. Learn. Practice. Evaluate. Refine. Be ruthlessly self-critical, not in a masochistic way but to ensure you continue to work to improve every aspect of that one thing.
Financially successful people do at least one thing better than just about everyone around them. (Of course it helps if you pick something to be great at that the world also values--and will pay for.)
Excellence is its own reward, but excellence also commands higher pay--and greater respect, greater feelings of self-worth, greater fulfillment, a greater sense of achievement...all of which make you rich in non-monetary terms.
Win-win.

6. Make a list of the world's 10 best people at that one thing
How did you pick those 10? How did you determine who was the best? How did you measure their success?
Use those criteria to track your own progress towards becoming the best.
If you're an author, it could be Amazon rankings. If you're a musician, it could be iTunes downloads. If you're a programmer, it could be the number of people that use your software. If you're a leader, it could be the number of people you train and develop who move on to bigger and better things. If you're an online retailer, it could be purchases per visitor, or on-time shipping, or conversion rate....
Don't just admire successful people. Take a close look at what makes them successful. Then use those criteria to help create your own measures of success. And then...

7. Consistently track your progress
We tend to become what we measure, so track your progress at least once a week against your key measures.
Maybe you'll measure how many people you've helped. Maybe you'll measure how many customers you've served. Maybe you'll evaluate the key steps on your journey to becoming the world's best at one thing.
Maybe it's a combination of those things, and more.

8. Build routines that ensure progress
Never forget that achieving a goal is based on creating routines. Say you want to write a 200-page book. That's your goal. Your system to achieve that goal could be to write four pages a day; that's your routine. Wishing and hoping won't get you to a finished manuscript, but sticking faithfully to your routine ensures you reach your goal.
Or say you want to land 100 new customers through inbound marketing. That's your goal; your routine is to create new content, new videos, new podcasts, new white papers, etc., on whatever schedule you set. Stick to that routine and meet your deadlines, and if your content is great, you will land those new customers.
Wishing and hoping won't get you there--sticking faithfully to your routine will.
Set goals, create routines that support those goals, and then ruthlessly track your progress. Fix what doesn't work. Improve and repeat what does work. Refine and revise and adapt and work hard every day to be better than you were yesterday.

Soon you'll be good.
Then you'll be great.
And one day you'll be WORLD CLASS.
And then, probably without even noticing, you'll also be a millionaire. You know, if you like that sort of thing.
